Program Brief
As part of the research project funded by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), Explore Aid implemented an engagement initiative that brought together survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) as key advocates for transitional gender justice in conflict-affected communities. This participatory approach empowers survivors to shape policies and programs that affect their lives.
The initiative facilitated dialogue sessions, advocacy training, and storytelling workshops where survivors shared their experiences with policymakers, traditional leaders, and international stakeholders. The goal was to ensure that transitional justice mechanisms—such as reparations, memorialization, and institutional reform—are gender-responsive and survivor-centered.
Key outcomes: a survivor-led advocacy network established in three states; policy recommendations submitted to the National Human Rights Commission; increased visibility of survivor voices in peace negotiations; and a documentary film co-created by survivors. The program demonstrates that survivors are not just victims but powerful agents of change.
