Program Brief
Explore Aid convened 100 women and girls, including SGBV survivors, to document and analyze the barriers they face in participating in peacebuilding and transitional justice processes, and to examine how climate change undermines their engagement. This initiative, supported by the Global Initiative Against Impunity and the European Union, addresses the intersection of gender, conflict, and climate vulnerability.
Through participatory research and dialogue forums, participants identified key obstacles: lack of access to decision-making spaces, discriminatory social norms, and the disproportionate impact of climate-induced displacement on women. The program trained women in advocacy, negotiation, and climate resilience, enabling them to articulate demands to local authorities and at regional climate conferences.
Outcomes include: formation of a women's peace and climate network in the Lake Chad region; integration of gender-sensitive language into three local climate action plans; and a community-led early warning system for floods that prioritizes the needs of women and girls. The findings are being used to influence national policies on climate adaptation and peacebuilding.
