Empowering Change Makers through Explore Aids Transitional Gender Justice Training Initiatives

Over the course of three days, Explore Aid Nigeria hosted a transformative training program aimed at empowering researchers and research assistants for transitional gender justice in Nigeria. With a focus on Conflict-Related Sexual Violence (CRSV) survivors, the training sought to equip participants with essential research skills and knowledge to drive impactful change in the realm of gender justice.
The training commenced with a pre-test assessment after which Dr. Lawan Balami, Executive Director of Explore Aid Nigeria, welcomed everyone with inspiring remarks, setting the tone for the days ahead. The overview of the Transitional Gender Justice Project by Dr. Balami outlined its goals and objectives, igniting a sense of purpose among the attendees.
Thereafter a seasoned Monitoring and Evaluation Consultant delved into the intricacies of research methodologies, including qualitative and quantitative approaches, and the importance of ethical considerations when engaging with survivors of CRSV. Explore Aids GBV consultant further enriched the session with insights into Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and its core concepts, fostering a deeper understanding among the participants.
On day 2, the training built upon the foundation laid on the first day, participants engaged in practical sessions focused on developing interview guides and translating essential research tools. Dr. Balami facilitated discussions on the formulation of effective focus group discussion guides and survey questionnaires, encouraging collaborative efforts among the attendees.
Through group work and presentations, participants showcased their expertise in translating research materials, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity in data collection processes. The session concluded with a comprehensive review, allowing for feedback, corrections, and the adoption of finalized translated questionnaires.
The final day saw participants immerse themselves in real-world application as they ventured into nearby research sites for pre-testing focus group discussion guides on community members. Led by the research co-ordinator; the debrief session provided valuable insights, refining strategies for effective data collection and analysis.
In a significant step towards safeguarding and ethical practice, Explore Aid’s HR Consultant, presented Explore Aid’s Safeguarding and Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) policies. The research assistants, demonstrating their commitment to upholding ethical standards, signed these policies, affirming their dedication to the cause of gender justice.
Outcomes:
The Transitional Gender Justice in Nigeria Research Assistants Training concluded on a note of empowerment and determination. Armed with newfound knowledge, skills, and a strong ethical framework, the participants emerged as catalysts for change in the fight against gender-based injustices. With the support of Explore Aid Nigeria, they are poised to embark on impactful research endeavours, paving the way towards a more just and equitable society.
