Project Pilot Testing of Ethical Protocols and Data Collection Instruments

Part of Explore Aids protocols for adherence to international best practices and ethical guidelines is the pilot testing of all research instruments before their administration on the field. This crucial step aimed to apply the ethical protocols and principles outlined in our training to real-world scenarios, with a focus on protecting research participants and project beneficiaries.
Engagement with Female Community Members: Under the guidance of the research coordinator, teams of researchers and research assistants ventured into local communities to engage with female community members. With sensitivity and respect, they facilitated focus group discussions and interviews, aiming to gather insights into experiences of Conflict-Related Sexual Violence (CRSV) and transitional justice.
Application of Ethical Protocols: At every stage of the pilot testing, the researchers remained steadfast in upholding the ethical protocols and principles instilled during their training. Prioritizing informed consent, participants were provided with clear explanations of the research objectives and their rights. Confidentiality measures were rigorously implemented to safeguard the privacy and anonymity of participants.
Ensuring Cultural Sensitivity: Recognizing the diverse cultural contexts within which the research will be conducted, researchers approached interactions with cultural humility and sensitivity. Cultural nuances were respected, ensuring that participants felt comfortable and valued throughout the process.
Reflection and Adaptation: Throughout the pilot testing, researchers remained open to feedback and reflection. Any ethical concerns or challenges were addressed promptly, with a commitment to continuous improvement. This adaptive approach ensured that the research process remained aligned with the highest ethical standards.
Outcome
The pilot testing of transitional gender justice research on female community members exemplified the unwavering commitment of Explore Aid Nigeria and its partners to ethical research practices. Through the application of rigorous protocols and principles, coupled with cultural sensitivity and empowerment, the research teams demonstrated their dedication to advancing gender justice in Nigeria. As they move forward, guided by the lessons learned during the pilot testing phase, they are poised to make meaningful contributions towards a more just and equitable society.
